1:42 am
>> even during tv interviews, which is why they are hoping maryland lawmakers keep the department of education budget in tact that would bring relief to 100 families who can't afford autism treatment. >> therapy, integration services is one of them. that is the most important because that's what gets us therapy. >> unfortunately, sam and his family don't stand to gain anything if the line item passes. currently, the waiting list has more than 3900 children. sam is number 405. >> at this rate, he'll be 15 before he gets services. >> maryland is one of the few states that doesn't mandate insurance companies to cover autism treatment. so families rely on medicaid to pay for some of it. but the therapy sam needs costs a lot more. >> a program for him, that would be effective for him would be about three to four hours a week. we are only getting one. >> to bridge the void, sam's parents make sure he has plenty of comforts at home.

1:46 am
democrats and republicans are designing ways to blame each other if it comes and today, the white house put out a long list of programs that will be cut back if sequestration hits. >> if congress and the white house can't find a way to avoid sequestration, the next goal is to avoid the blame when real voters begin to feel the effects. >> virginia senator, mark warner. >> this is going to be awful. people do not understand. >> the white house put out a long list friday of domestic programs that will be cut back by sequestration. it follows a list of slashes to the defense department made public earlier this week and referred by the president friday evening. >> there is no reason, no reason for that to happen. putting our fiscal house in order calls for a balanced approach, not massive cuts that could have a severe impact on
1:47 am

1:48 am
>> it goes on and on. thank you. still ahead, you have to see the video that had all of us laughing tonight. a nine-year-old who is really excited about the weather and we mean really excited. watch out, top. >> topper jr. all right, remember the kansas man who donated sperm to a lesbian cup and will now he is being sued for child support? we had questions for this, so we spent debra to a local sperm bank to find out what you need to know before you
1:49 am
1:50 am
it was the kind of news story that makes you say, huh? a kansas man that donated sperm is now being slapped with child support. >> this story generated tons of questions, so we sent debra to get some answers. i'm hoping you got some. >> i definitely have a few. william of topeka, kansas, answered a craigslist ad and donated sperm to a lesbian
1:51 am
couple. fast forward, that couple is no longer together, they filed for welfare and the state hits up him for money. if you are left scratching your head, we went to one of the top sperm banks for answers. >> what's the biggest misconception about that whole news story in kansas? >> that it was a donor that came from a sperm bank. >> if you were as shocked as many were to hear about the state of kansas going after a sperm donor for child support, know this donor turned dad didn't donate through what you might think of, when you think of a sperm bank. after answering a craigslist ad in 2009, william dropped his sperm off at the door of couple, angela bower and jennifer shriner. >> for me, for all intents and purposes is a contract that says look, i'm giving up parental rights. >> kansas law says differently. dr. michelle. >> many states automatically say, if an insemination does
1:52 am
not take place, either in a physician's office or under a physician's guidance, that donor will automatically be considered as a parental figure. >> and that's why kansas wants the government assistance they paid back from morata. >> you don't have to deal with any of that because the donors agreements are with us. >> i believe it's unethical. >> this donor talked to us on the condition we wouldn't show his face or name. he passed the genetic medical and other testing fairfax bank requires. our donor admits although he is protected, he wasn't 100% clear on the law. and frankly, he's surprised. >> i think there are a lot of variables in it and the state have their reasons for doing what they are doing. i think it's crazy, especially for the kid. >> his attorneys filed a petition to have the case dismissed. in case you're wondering, because so many people asked us, as fairfax bank sperm donor could make $150 per donation.
1:53 am
that's $150 per donation. or up to $4,000 in six months. back to you, lesli. >> wow. o.k. well, should the washington redskins change their team name? that question is at the root of any number of arguments this week, but tonight, derek says the answer really isn't that hard to come by. >> no, lesli, think about it. if we were naming our football team today, clearly, no one would even consider a name like redskins because it would be offensive. why do so many of us hold on so tightly to a name created in a time when few cared about such things? i said it before. it's probably always a bad idea to name a sports team after a living, breathing ethnic group, even if the intent is honorable. let's be real, does the name redskins really sound like it's honoring anybody? you know, i once had a conversation with a native american who spoke so passionately about how hurtful that name is. i felt a shame, like i needed
1:54 am
to apologize for being a fan. but that was years ago. and like a lot of you, i put my unease aside to root with the team i grew up with. wasn't this past season just a glorious ride? even that got me to thinking, is it right to have so much fun with something that others find so painful? look, i love the redskins and i'll miss the name, i'll be honest. traditions die hard. at a time when being a washington football fan just got to be fun again, shouldn't our favorite team have a name that everyone can feel that good about? lesli, top. >> absolutely. i like what mike had to say. i like washington warriors. >> that's not bad. >> that's pretty god. >> good. i can live with that. >> as long as rg is healthy. >> we need to get him out there. >> he is a warrior. >> absolutely. you wish you were a snow warrior right now, don't you? >> i'm a wind warrior right now. that's the only thing we have to show for this blizzard. we have a wind advisory until
1:55 am
6:00 a.m. tomorrow. let's start with a live look outside. high temperature 43. temperatures haven't fallen off the table. notice a dew point in the low 20s. it was in the mid 30s earlier. dryer air is moving in. it will get colder. winds picking up at 21 and yes, that is courtesy of departing the blizzard. so, wind advisory at one time, i tweeted this out. originally was frederick county and loudoun county north and west, now the entire metro area has been added to the wind advisory until 6:00 a.m. wind gusts 40 to 50 miles per hour. that covers you folks in st. mary's county. zoom in, we're looking at the blizzard in new england. the precipitation is filled n. at one time, north jersey was out of the loop. now the snow is filled back in. we get the counterclock wise flow, that's why we have the big wind. this storm is really deepening. the pressure is falling slowly and i think before the night is over, you're going see hurricane forced winds along
1:56 am
the coast of massachusetts. so essentially, 74-mile an hour winds or higher and it's not technically a hurricane because it is a cold storm. we have clouds to the north. we could see a couple flurries pass by tonight. no closer than frederick or gaithersburg. for the most part, our wind is our headline overnight. morning windchills will be in the teens. winds 30 miles an hour or higher until noon. colder on saturday night. winds are lax. bad news, temperatures plummet. not as cold on sunday. pretty nice way to finish the weekend. so overnight, 26 to 32 for lows. mostly cloudy, windy. maybe a flurry. winds now northwest at 20 to 40 and gusty. winds still brisk. northwest 15 to 30 and gusty. 20s and 30s, you factor in the winds. and by afternoon, still rather windy, but not as crazy windy. mostly sunny, windy colder. windchills in the 20s and high temperatures near 40.
1:57 am
now we have winds northwest at about 10 to 20 and gusty. so, the next three days, we're going to keep everything green for now. we'll monitor monday, but certainly tomorrow is green. windy in the morning, clouds and mostly sunny, 39. sunday not as cold. clouds come in late. the bulk of the day is nice. mid 40s. and then monday, locate the umbrella. we're on the warm side of that storm. that will bring us rain with temperatures in the low 50s. however, the next seven days, tuesday looks very nice. we're back in the low 50s. wednesday, thursday, we have a storm from the south. may start out as rain, could end as snow wednesday night into thursday morning. back in the 40s on thursday and next friday looks nice with temperatures back into the low 50s. >> all right, we know it is a big night in d.c. sports because dave has on a vest. >> coming back. >> this is from the deacon collection. >> we have a big board for d.c. sports fans tonight.

now, here's dave owens at the wusa9 cadillac sports desk. >> man, just imagine if the wizards could press the delete button on the first month and a half of the season. we'd be talking about another d.c. pro team making the playoffs. don't laugh. they are one game above .500 with john wahl, just as good as milwaukee, the current eighth seed. bradley beale back tonight, sore wrist and all. you know it's a good night when this starts happening. put this on your bucket list. shot clock running down. don't play horse with him. only one for five on the night. john wahl, you know what i call
2:01 am
him, master magician. he also had four steals and fast twitch muscles. 89-74. >> and i saw it coming out tonight and digging in again like we did from a defensive standpoint. set up the whole game for us. we won that game defensively. >> no doubt about that. washington now 9-7 since wahl's return. those were great highlights, so let's show you some more. it's something i hope will become tradition here on friday. we called our fave5. featuring local sports teams, compliments of my producer. all right, here we go. number five. this is maryland's alex. i call him the ukrainian obliterator. he says, your manuscript won't be needed here. he's a publisher. terps win by 5. not many highlights, but mike hit me
2:02 am
with your best shot. this is always a highlight. rg3 walking, talking, without any crutches. no limp brought home the rookie of the year. that is number 3 on our highlight reel. number two, john wahl back to wednesday night. he tells carmelo anthony, man, get that out of here. please. and you know it's laundry day. >> number one, super bowl, a lot of highlights from this one. joe flacco escaped. bolden making the great catch right here, and the toe tap. 33-yards, ravens win super bowl xlvii. if the ravens cut him, he'll retire. how about that? >> with more great highlights from this week. derek mcginty's favorite music here. game of the week. hi mom. she turned right toward the camera. all right. i call this girl right here the
